The Factory history in Australia starts October 1979 with a company named GAP Records, founded by Rolling Stone Australia editor Paul Gardiner and British born Andrew Penhallow (GAP = G ardiner A nd P enhallow), licensing (among others) Factory releases for Australia.
The way the Australian releases are made, is by Factory UK sending 1/4 inch master tapes (and later digital masters) and original artwork to Australia, where then the vinyl and the sleeves are produced.
GAP is signed to EMI Australia Ltd., doing the manufacturing and distribution. The GAP catalogue system for singles is based on a compromise between GAP and EMI: GAP would define the prefix and EMI allocated their generic number. SFA stands for Single Factory Australia. For LPs the initial idea for a prefix was "FACTOR" but was then dropped in favour of "FACOZ".
Although having everything in place by the end of 1980, the first releases are in February 1981.
In 1982, after expiry of the two year contract and dissatisfied with the ever expanding "independent" labels department within EMI, GAP decides to change distribution to CBS Records Australia Ltd. (however, distribution in New Zealand and South East Asia, remained with EMI). All releases follow the UK numbering system from this point on.
Also in 1982, GAP extended their Factory operations to New Zealand, taking over from RTC (other labels, eg. Rough Trade, were already handled). The first Factory/ GAP release in New Zealand was Blue Monday in 1983, which went gold there.
Despite already set up in 1984, July 1985 is the official start of Factory Records Australasia, now headed by Andrew Penhallow only. GAP Records Australia and New Zealand are merged into the new company. Factory Records Australasia soon becomes Factory's most successful foreign offshoot with a number of singles and albums reaching into the Australian Top 20, Top 10 and even Top 5 charts. All Factory Australasia records and three CD's (sharing a generic CBS number) are manufactured and distributed by CBS. All other CD's were imported.
1990 sees the demise of Factory Australasia, mainly because Factory headquarters in Manchester want to secure a better commercial backing
(with obviously higher advances) through a major label. Factory boss Tony Wilson travels to Sydney and, together with Penhallow, negotiations are
held with several Australian based labels. Eventually, Festival Records Pty Ltd. makes the highest offer and so the entire catalogue
moves to the Sydney based company, starting with production in June 1990. Festival re-issues every Australian Factory record released so far and
continues with the new Factory releases (except for Electronic), using their own numbering system. Andrew Penhallow stays in a 'caretaker' role with
the new Factory/Festival arrangement until 1992, and then concentrates on his own label Volition (also founded in 1984 and focussed on
Australian acts), which also becomes a sought after Australian classic.
Sadly, Andrew passed away in May 2023.
